Australs
Located in the southernmost part of French Polynesia, the Australs constitute an archipelago with a total surface area of around 152km2. Extending over a length of 1317km, the archipelago is 573km from Papeete for the nearest island (Rurutu) and 1301km for the farthest (Marotiri). It takes 1h30 by plane to reach the Australs from Tahiti. Renowned for its rich culture, cliffs and caves, the archipelago is sometimes called the Tubuai Islands, after its largest island. On the sea side, humpback whales can be seen from August to October, when they come to give birth.
