Australs Archipelago
Tubuai Island is located in the center of the Australs group, 640 km south of Tahiti. It has a surface area of 45 km2 and is made up of two ancient volcanic complexes culminating at 422m in height. The island is surrounded by a large lagoon, the largest in the Austral Islands. The surrounding coral reef covers an area of 85 km2, twice the size of the island, and is sometimes 5 km wide. Its depth is shallow, hence its turquoise-blue color. Its waters are constantly replenished by a fairly strong and constant current, which contributes, among other things, to the preservation of the ocean floor and the good health of the coral, which does not suffer from bleaching as on other islands.
