Huahine, also known as "Woman's Island" because it has always been ruled by queens, has around 6000 inhabitants on a surface area of 75km². Huahine is made up of two mountain ranges separated by two bays, whose reliefs are said to represent a pregnant woman in an embrace. The population makes its living from fishing, growing vanilla, melons and watermelons, and extracting copra. Like Tahiti, Huahine is divided into two parts: Huahine Iti to the south, and Huahine Nui to the north. Huahine Nui is home to Fare, the island's main town and capital of the municipality of Huahine. The island is served by an airfield. Divers can observe a wide variety of coral reefs with remarkable relief. The lagoon is a veritable open-air aquarium that will satisfy even the most inexperienced divers.
